In 1737, Sir William Fownes commissioned an elegant mansion on the Woodstock Estate he had inherited in Inistioge, Co.Kilkenny He hoped to establish himself with the gentry of the area - and ultimately impress the Earl of Bessborough, whose daughter Elizabeth he planned to marry. Over the next forty five years, Woodstock was the background to a series of spectacular dramas that led to the untimely deaths of William, Elizabeth and their son-in-law William Tighe.
